China is beating back traffic in its most congested cities

This article analyzes how China’s most congested cities have been successfully reducing traffic congestion, with more than half of the top 30 most-congested cities seeing declines in rush-hour traffic from 2016 to 2017. Using data from AutoNavi’s annual traffic report, it finds that cities like Hangzhou and Shenzhen achieved congestion reductions of 12.5% and 9% respectively, even amid rising populations.
